How to paint a landscape from imagination

THE BASIC COURSE

2. Colours & Sky

In this lesson we will make a study of four different trees, so you can have an example of what to look for and how to find patterns in their way of growing. We will also get into some brush techniques, that will help to paint the trees in an easy way. Everything you learn here, you can adapt on other trees too. Maybe next time you go for a walk, find yourself a species of trees, try to understand how they grow and sketch their pattern until your hand and mind remembers it. This is all about practice!

The rainbow technique & preparing the canvas

When you paint from imagination, without something to look at, it can be difficult to know where to start. An easy way to begin is to just start with colors and the sky. For now you don't need to know anything more but the rough daytime and mood you want to have in your painting. For that it can be helpful to use the rainbow technique as a guidance to create a natural looking sky and background. So, for the next steps you can either pick your own colours from the rainbow gradient or just follow along. But before we begin with the painting it's important to prepare the canvas.

YOUR SHOPPING LIST

Simple midday sky with two colours - Painting 1

For the first painting we are going to create a simple midday sky with the two different types of blue from our rainbow gradient. In this session you will learn how to create an even background and a smooth transition between the colours to give your landscape a first direction.

Sunset sky with three colours - Painting 2

In our second painting we want a bit more of a sunrise or sunset time of day. This is a little bit more challenging as we are going to add yellow as a third colour to our sky, which will also bring a light green into the transition. In this session you will learn how to create a natural looking gradient between these three colours and how to prepare the sky for the sun later on.
