How to paint a landscape from imagination

THE BASIC COURSE

6. Trees

In this lesson we will make a study of four different trees, so you can have an example of what to look for and how to find patterns in their way of growing. We will also get into some brush techniques, that will help to paint the trees in an easy way. Everything you learn here, you can adapt on other trees too. Maybe next time you go for a walk, find yourself a species of trees, try to understand how they grow and sketch their pattern until your hand and mind remembers it. This is all about practice!

Fir Tree

In this session we (and some very interested sheep) will look at the fir tree. It has a very simple and recognisable pattern, that can also easily be implemented with the brush. By using the filbert brush it's possible to mimic all the different branches and needles with just a few brush strokes.

YOUR SHOPPING LIST

Pine Tree

Though they are both in the needle family, the pine tree has a much more unique and artistic way of growing than the fir tree. But still, it's possible to narrow it down to a basic pattern that we will discover in this session. You will also learn a simple technique to paint the needles with the filbert brush.

Birch

The birch is the first leave tree we will have a look at. Also here we focus on it's very basic way of growing to understand how it works. We can see that the branches grow out unevenly with diamond shaped leaves at the top, that grow out unevenly as well. We will also go into how to paint leaves with the filbert brush. It can be very helpful to sketch and paint this over and over again until your hand and your mind remembers the pattern automatically.

Willow Tree

The willow here in Norway has many similarities with the birch. But this time we will go into a bit more difficult way of painting it. We will use the liner to paint individual branches and leaves, which will give you more control over what you paint. This is a way of painting you can use if you wish your landscape to be more detailed and refined.
